Electoral Literacy Club is a platform to engage college students through interesting activities and hands-on experience to sensitise with their electoral rights. It is constituted at the behest of Election Commission of India (ECI) with a motive to spread awareness and ensure the participation of youth & future voters who are pillars of Indian democracy.

The club will have all the students from all semesters as its members. One can become a member by registering herself/himself at the beginning of the academic year. After registration, one is recognized as a member till the completion of her/his graduation course.

Electoral Literacy Club promotes democratic values among students through various engaging activities, programs and hand-on experiences. It helps students by providing an environment where they can learn, grow, and develop altogether through the umbrella of activities like interactive sessions, seminars, and panel discussions by inviting dignitaries, motivators, mentors etc. It makes the young students democratically attentive and prepare them for their future by conducting various activities and events that benefit the students as well as the country at the large.

Establishment of Electoral Literacy Club at SXC, Ranchi:

The establishment of the Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) at the Department of Political Science took place in July 2017. The Club, first of its kind in Jharkhand, is established under the Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) program of the Election Commission of India (ECI). The major objective behind the formation of the ELC at the department is to make young and future voters electorally literate.

The Club which is purely apolitical and non-partisan in nature strictly prohibits the propagation and discussion of any ideology or policies of political parties. The only aim is to spread voter literacy. The club through its activity based approach, endeavors to reach out to young citizens who have either exercised their franchise for the first time or are to attain eligibility as voters in the near future. Working under the aegis of the Chief Electoral Officer, the ELC proposes to hold voter education programs across the state of Jharkhand in the form of Election Olympiad, Mock Elections seminars and discussions enlightening voters to learn the various dimensions of electoral process.

Vision:

Electoral literacy club aims at strengthening the culture of electoral participation among young and future voters.

Objectives of the Electoral Literacy Club:

  • The main objective of ELC is to promote awareness of ‘Right to vote’ among students, faculty members and community at large.
  • To enable critical thinking on issues related to election rights, democracies and its processes.
  • To help the students and community to understand the value of their vote and exercise their right to franchise in a confident, comfortable and ethical manner.
  • ELC works to educate the future voters about enrolment, and other electoral process like EVM/VVPAT.
  • To facilitate voter registration for the eligible students who are not yet registered.
  • To develop a culture of electoral participation and maximize the ethical voting and follow the principle ‘Every vote counts’ and ‘No voters to be left behind’.
