The Department of Economics includes 5 faculty whose research covers most major areas of modern economics. We are committed to the complementary goals of providing high-quality undergraduate education and producing high-quality economic research. The goal of our curriculum is to help students develop an understanding of how individuals, organizations and societies make the choices that determine how an economy’s scarce resources are allocated among alternative uses, and the consequences of those decisions. Nearly two-thirds of all Xavierian graduates take our introductory course. For students interested in a deeper understanding of the discipline, we offer courses that teach the theoretical tools of economics, and applied elective courses that demonstrate how economists use these tools to study a wide variety of real-world economic issues.

The relatively young department of sociology has been successfully able to carve a niche for itself in a short span of time since its inception in 2015. The department of Sociology aims to engender analytical and critical thinking among its students and has continuously endeavoured to incorporate the most contemporary debates in Sociology in its academic curriculum. The entire syllabus was restructured in light of changing trends in sociology both at the conceptual and methodological level. It was felt that the changes could not b affected without parallel changes in he curriculum. So while the monological method of teaching continued, it was supplemented with various kinds of practical exposures. Village trips were therefore organized for every batch of students so tat students learn how to relate theory with facts, not only that the village exposure helps the students to develop a perspective which they would not have attained otherwise.

Zoology is the study of living organisms, specifically animals. Zoologists study multiple species in a certain ecosystem, population interactions, and specific species or behaviors. The department of Geology been playing role in nurturing the Geosciences education in this mineral rich state of Jharkhand. Our undergraduate and graduate students gain a strong foundation across the geosciences. Areas of specialization may include environmental and isotope geochemistry, applied geophysics and tectonics, paleoclimatology, planetary science, remote sensing and GIS, volcanology, and human-environmental interactions. As Geologists, we are responsible to locate and assist in the extraction of mineral deposits such as gold, metallic ores, coal, petroleum and even building materials and economically useful clays. More common but vital materials such as stone aggregates for making concrete and road building, limestone for the cement, fertilizer and chemical industries, and sand for building or glass manufacture.The laboratories in the Department are moderately well equipped with sophisticated instruments to support high quality teaching and research. The fourth pillar of democracy, as the mass media has been christened, seems to have become one of the most popular career options for the youth today. However, on account of changing technology and new dimensions of the media industry , it calls for a well earned higher degree in the field of journalism and mass communication before one distinguishes himself or herself in a diversity of media related fields and makes his or her career as TV producer, film producer, reporter, editor, camera person, teacher and scholar. It is with this vision that St Xavier's College, declared as College with Potential for Excellence by the UGC and accredited with Grade A+ by NAAC, has launched two year/ four semester course in Master in Journalism & Mass Communication (MJMC). The three year's UG course that the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication offers here consists of four parts: Print Media, Electronic Media, Advertisement and Film studies. Students of Journalism and Mass Communication are taught how to write, how to operate the video camera, techniques of video editing and sound. Different aspects of the world of advertisement too are taught. Films studies include different stages of film making like script and screenplay writing, cinematography and post production. The department also holds a students' festival at which short fiction and documentary prepared by the students, are screened. Students from other colleges are also take part in it. Reputed persons from film making are invited to grace the occasion, where the students interact with them face to face. The fest is entirely a students' affair, and the teachers only play a midwifery role.

The State Government has directed the Universities to introduce vocational programmes at the Degree level from 1994-95 sessions in accordance with the guidelines of the UGC.The Professional Honours/Management/Vocational Honours programmes are conducted in this College with the objective of train the students in skill based and job oriented programmes that will enables them to find gainful employment in the job market or equip them for self – employment. These skill based courses are conducted in an entirely different environment than the traditional ones. The teaching and learning environment consists of regular classroom teaching, intensive practicals, intensive summer trainings, seminars, workshops, field study and On-Job-Training. The college tries to ensure that gainful employment opportunities are available to these students.The selection is done on the basis of an Entrance Test and Interview. The subject matter of the Entrance Tests is displayed on the college notice board and college web site. Applicants are expected to consult the college notice board and the college website. No information will be sent them separately.

Department of Geology

The department of Geology been playing role in nurturing the Geosciences education in this mineral rich state of Jharkhand. Our undergraduate and graduate students gain a strong foundation across the geosciences. Areas of specialization may include environmental and isotope geochemistry, applied geophysics and tectonics, paleoclimatology, planetary science, remote sensing and GIS, volcanology, and human-environmental interactions. As Geologists, we are responsible to locate and assist in the extraction of mineral deposits such as gold, metallic ores, coal, petroleum and even building materials and economically useful clays. More common but vital materials such as stone aggregates for making concrete and road building, limestone for the cement, fertilizer and chemical industries, and sand for building or glass manufacture.The laboratories in the Department are moderately well equipped with sophisticated instruments to support high quality teaching and research. The Department has a well maintained Museum that has a display of rocks, minerals and fossils from type areas and other geologically important horizons in India and abroad collected by its faculty members and research scholars.Outlook for employment in the Department is at its all-time best Geology jobs are more than just exploration for oil and mining: understanding geology underpins diverse efforts in urban planning, environmental restoration, analytical and research laboratories. The fourth pillar of democracy, as the mass media has been christened, seems to have become, of late, one of the most popular career options for the youth today. However, on account of changing technology and new dimensions of the media industry , it calls for a well earned higher degree in the field of journalism and mass communication before one distinguishes himself or herself in a diversity of media related fields and makes his or her career as TV producer, film producer, reporter, editor, camera person, teacher and scholar. It is with this vision that St Xavier’s College, declared as College with Potential for Excellence by the UGC and accredited with Grade A+ by NAAC, has launched two year/ four semester course in Master in Journalism & Mass Communication (MJMC). The three years' UG course that the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication offers here consists of four parts: Print Media, Electronic Media, Advertisement and Film studies. Students of Journalism and Mass Communication are taught how to write, how to operate the video camera, techniques of video editing and sound. Different aspects of the world of advertisement too are taught. Films studies include different stages of film making like script and screenplay writing, cinematography and post production. The department also holds a students' festival at which short fiction and documentary prepared by the students, are screened. Students from other colleges are also take part in it. Reputed persons from film making are invited to grace the occasion, where the students interact with them face to face. The fest is entirely a students' affair, and the teachers only play a midwifery role.

The State Government has directed the Universities to introduce vocational programmes at the Degree level from 1994-95 sessions in accordance with the guidelines of the UGC.The Professional Honours/Management/Vocational Honours programmes are conducted in this College with the objective of train the students in skill based and job oriented programmes that will enables them to find gainful employment in the job market or equip them for self – employment. These skill based courses are conducted in an entirely different environment than the traditional ones. The teaching and learning environment consists of regular classroom teaching, intensive practicals, intensive summer trainings, seminars, workshops, field study and On-Job-Training. The college tries to ensure that gainful employment opportunities are available to these students.The selection is done on the basis of an Entrance Test and Interview. The subject matter of the Entrance Tests is displayed on the college notice board and college web site. Applicants are expected to consult the college notice board and the college website. No information will be sent them separately.
