National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector Scheme of Government of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. It provides opportunity to the students to take part in various government led community service activities & programmes. The sole aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service.

The motto of National Service Scheme is "NOT ME BUT YOU". It underlines that the welfare of an individual is ultimately dependent on the welfare of the society as a whole. This expresses the essence of democratic living and upholds the need of selfless service and appreciation of the other man’s point of view and also consideration for fellow human beings.

The overall objective of NSS is Personality Development of students through community service.

Vision

The vision is to build the youth with the mind and spirit to serve the society and work for the social uplift of the down-trodden masses of our nation as a movement.

Mission

The National Service Scheme has been functioning with the motto “NOT ME BUT YOU” in view of making the youth inspired in service of the people and hence NSS Aims Education through Community Service and Community Service through Education.

Broad Objectives

  1. Understand the community in which they work.
  2. Understand themselves in relation to their community.
  3. Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.
  4. Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
  5. Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems.
  6. Develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities.
  7. Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
  8. Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
  9. Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters and
  10. Practice national integration and social harmony.

  2. It provides diversified opportunities to students to develop their personality through community service.
  3. It helps in acquiring leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
  4. It develops a sense of involvement in the task of nation building.
  5. Volunteer’s interaction with the slum dwellers and villagers expose them to the realities of life and bring about a change in their social perception.
  6. He/she gets opportunities to see the community closely and thus gets an experience of human nature in relation to his/her environment.
  7. Gets the opportunity to meet the people from different walks of life.
  8. He/she gets the opportunity to participate in various State/National level programme such as National Integration Camps, Adventure programmes, Motivational Lamps, Value oriented Self-Development Programme, Workshops, Youth Exhibition, Cultural Programmes, Health Awareness Programme etc.

Rules & Regulations

  1. The Programme officer is the head of the NSS unit of St. Xavier's college.
  2. Prior Appointment should be taken for meeting with Programme officer from Student Representative.
  3. The Programme officer can change the student team at any time if any discrepencies are found.
  4. Every month from 1st to 7th monthly report meeting will be held, which should be joined by the student representattives.
  5. All the tools that are used for the event must be maintained in the register.
  6. No senior who is pass out should be involved in any NSS events.
  7. No one is allowed to enter the NSS office without the prior permission from NSS programme officer.
  8. During Sundays, National Holidays and University Holidays NSS office will be closed
  9. In case of urgency, students representative can meet the programme officer in the Department of Commerce.
  10. No camp should be organised without the prior notification of Ranchi University.
