St. Xavier’s College Ranchi is a Minority Educational Institution based on religion affiliated to Ranchi University. The College was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1944 with the primary objective of providing Higher Education in Christian atmosphere to all the deserving students with preferential option for the Christians, Schedule Tribe and Schedule Caste. It is established and administered by Ranchi Jesuit Province of the Society of Jesus. It is registered under the title ‘Xaviers Ranchi’ under the Society’s Registration Act XXI of 1860.
Principled on the motto “LUCENS ET ARDENS” which means ‘Spreading Light and Shining Bright’, St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi strives to groom intellectually competent, spiritually inspired, morally upright and socially committed citizens in the service of the nation.
St. Xavier’s College was conferred with autonomy in July 2005. It was re-accredited in 3rd cycle with grade A by national assessment and Accreditation Council on January 2013. UGC conferred on the college the status of College with Potential for Excellence in 2015. After re-accreditation in 4th cycle with B+ Grade by NAAC in May 2022, UGC has extended the autonomous status to the college for the period from 2022-23 to 2026-27.

The College aims at training young men and women of quality to be leaders in all the walks of life, whom we hope will play a vital role in bringing about the desired changes for the betterment of the people of our country, more particularly of the poorer sections of society.
The aim of the college is to educate young men and women to serve their fellow men and women in justice, truth and love. It fosters an atmosphere of intellectual vigor and moral rectitude in which the youth of our country may find their fulfilment and achieve greatness as eminent men and women of service.
St. Xavier's College consistently and constantly works to help the students evolve into Competent, Committed, Creative and Compassionate men and women for and with others. This is the core of Jesuit Education. This is what has made Xavier climb to the top league of colleges in India.
As a Jesuit higher educational institution, St Xavier's pursues a policy in admission, formation and training, in favour of the Christian minority and the poor i.e. socially and financially marginalized including SC / ST / OBC. Financial assistance in terms of scholarships etc are generously offered to deserving and talented students, irrespective of caste and creed.
St. Xavier's College offers the both UG and PG courses under six faculties : Arts, Science, Commerce, Business Administration, Vocational and Education. It also offers various professional certificate and diploma courses.
The Commerce classes begin at 6.45 a.m. and end at 9.55 a.m. The Arts and Science classes run from 10.00 a.m. to 3.45 p.m. The Evening Section classes are conducted from 2.10 p.m. to 6.30 p.m.
The first bell for the class is rung five minutes before the commencement of the forenoon session and second bell at the commencement of the class. A bell is given at the end of each period
At the first bell before each session the students shall go to their respective classes and take their seats so as to be present when the teacher enters. No student shall leave the classroom during the lecture without the permission of the teacher.
At the time of admission into Degree first year each student must pay the full fees at the beginning of the academic session itself. No partial payment is allowed, unless otherwise directed.
For Degree second and third year admission, every student must pay at least part of the fees at the beginning of the academic session itself failing which his name will not be entered in the admission and attendance registers.
The students of Degree Vocational Courses are allowed to pay the fees in two instalments. However, if a student leaves the course in the middle of three-year duration, he/she will have to pay full fees of all the one-year. The College Leaving Certificate will not be given unless this condition is fulfilled.
Students who have passed the Intermediate courses in this college cannot demand admission into the Degree courses as a matter of right.
Request for transfer from Evening Section to Day Section WILL NOT BE ENTERTAINED.
After admission is completed, change of subject is not allowed.
Students attending classes, meetings or other gatherings within the college campus are expected to be presentably dressed in accordance with the approved etiquette dress code.
When a student meets a member of the staff for the first time in the day, he/she must greet him/her appropriately.
Students are forbidden to smoke within the college premises or near the gate, to write or make any mark on the walls or desks, throw paper or ink on the floors of the classrooms or corridors.
Students are not allowed to loiter or stand about the verandahs or corridors of the college during class hours.
Students are forbidden to gather near the gate of the college or in the entrance premises between the gate and the hall.
Chewing pan or eating pan parag/gutka/tobacco and smoking are strictly forbidden in the college campus. Such students may be fined if they are caught.
The College reserves the right to dismiss a student at any time for serious indiscipline.
Students are not allowed to keep their cell phones and walkman on switch on mode when the classes are going on. Defaulters’ set will be confiscated if they are caught.
In 2009, in the wake of Aman Kachroo's death, University Grants Commission (UGC) passed UGC REGULATION ON CURBING THE MENACE OF RAGGING IN HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, 2009.[16] These regulation mandate every college responsibilities to curb the menace of ragging, including strict pre-emptive measures, like lodging freshers in a separate hostel, surprise raids especially at nights by the anti-ragging squad and submission of affidavits by all senior students and their parents taking oath not to indulge in ragging. Ragging is strictly prohibited and is a punishable offense (crime) by law.
St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi promotes dignity and respect to every human person. Dignity and respect comes when one decently presents himself/herself through the dress he/she wears as well as one presents himself/herself through behavior and speech. In this regard attention of the students to the following points is drawn:
Students are strongly recommended not to wear Trousers with more than four pockets and tight T-shirt, round collar T-shirt, dark glasses.
Girl students are recommended to tie their hair properly and not to come with flowing hair.
Girl students are directed not to wear sleeveless dress, short tops & tight jeans and capries.
