National Cadet Corps (NCC)

National Cadet Corps is the world’s largest voluntary uniformed youth organization which was raised by Parliamentary Act No XXXI of India in 1948 with 20,000 cadets. It has grown in stature and size over the years and currently has a sanctioned strength of more than 15 lakh cadets who undergo basic military like training for two years in the junior wing & junior division, and three years in the senior wing senior division. It focuses on the development of the cadet at the physical, mental, social and intellectual levels. It inculcates the qualities of courage, fellow- feeling, discipline, leadership and a secular perspective. It also instills a spirit of selfless service, sportsmanship and untiring dedication to duty.

St. Xavier's College has presently a functional NCC units namely 3 Jharkhand BN NCC Ranchi. NCC organizes many camps throughout the year in which the youth are trained professionally by experts from the Army, Navy and Air wing. Cadets are awarded with ‘B’ and ‘C’ certificates which enable them to obtain 5-10% advantage in securing employment with the Armed forces, Para military and Police. In addition, NCC also provides various kinds of scholarships, camps in adventure sports including parasailing, firing, paragliding, hot air balloon rides, rock climbing and mountaining every year. Besides, it also holds National Integration camp (NIC), Basic leadership camp (BLC) and Annual Training Camp (ATC).

The members of the N.C.C. are eligible to appear for ‘B’ certificate & ‘C’ certificate examinations. Those who obtain ‘C’ certificate and have secured a degree can appear for direct commission in the S.S.B. and Defence Force without appearing for U.P.S.C. Examinations.

Objectives of NCC:

  • To develop character, discipline, comradeship, secular outlook, ideals of selfless services and adventure spirits amongst large numbers of young citizens.
  • To create a pool of trained, organized and motivated youth with various leadership qualities in every walk of their life and serve the Nation irrespective of the career they choose.
  • To fulfill the requirements expected in the latest socio-economic scenario in India.
  • To provide a sound environment conducive towards motivating large numbers of young people of India to join armed forces.
  • Teach positive thinking and attitude to the youth.
  • Become a main source of national integration by making NCC as one of the greatest and strong united forces of our nation irrespective of any caste, creed, religion or region.
  • Mould the youth of the entire country into a united secular and disciplined citizen of the nation.
  • Provide an ideal platform for the youth to showcase their ability in nation building.
  • Instill the spirit of secularism and united India by organizing national integration camps all over the country.

Benefits of NCC:

  1. In every regular course of Indian Military Academy (IMA), 32 vacancies are reserved for the ‘C’ certified NCC cadets.
  2. The cadets with ‘C’ certificate are exempted from the CDS examination conducted by the UPSC.
  3. NCC ‘C’ certification offers you 10-15 bonus marks in paramilitary forces recruitment i.e. BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP etc.
  4. If you have NCC ‘C’ certificate then your written exam will be waived off for the post of soldier GD.
  5. NCC cadets have a lot academic incentives.
  6. Other than just military training the cadets also learn several other valuable qualities such as selflessness, honesty, discipline, hard work and ways to build confidence, and gain leadership qualities leading to overall personality development.

Other Benefits of NCC:

  • For ORs, Sailors, Airmen: 5 to 10 percent bonus marks awarded for recruitment.
  • Para Military Forces: 2 to 10 bonus marks awarded for recruitment.
  • CRPF: NCC cadets holding third division degree (i.e. ‘C’ Certificate) are eligible for recruitment to gazetted posts.
  • Department of Telecommunication: Bonus marks awarded for recruitment.
  • NCC: Civilian Gliding Instructor/ Girl Cadet Instructor/ Whole Time Lady Officers.
  • State Govts: Preference for state services in certain posts.
  • Industry: Some industries give preference to NCC ‘C’ certificate holders for various jobs related to the field security.
  • NCC Games: Cash awards to teams and individuals for excellence.
  • Public Sector: Many organizations from the public sector give advantages to the cadets with ‘C’ certificate like Indian Airlines, Pawan Hans Ltd., and many more.

NCC Camps:

Camps constitute the most important part of NCC training. Every cadet in the NCC is exposed to develop self- reliance, team work, camaraderie, self confidence and dignity of labour through various thrilling and heart venturing camps. The cadets are exposed to the excitement of camp life to feel regimented way of life, and where they apply the theoretical knowledge that they had gained in college Training. These camps are as follows:

  1. Annual Training Camp (ATC): This is the foremost basic camp in NCC that is held within the State under the aegis of respective NCC Directorates. Therefore, each cadet in the NCC is expected to attend this camp to complete one’s Training Syllabi.
  2. Republic Day Camp (RDC) and Prime Minister’s (PM’s) Rally: This camp unites cadets from across India for various activities, drill and a grand parade on Republic Day, to highlight their role in National Celebration. The Prime Minister’s Rally is the most prestigious event of the NCC Republic Day Camp is held on 28 January every year.
  3. Thal Sainik Camp (TSC): It emphasizes on land-based military training that includes drill, firing, obstacle training, map-reading and many more adventurous courses.
  4. Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat (EBSB): This camp is composed for cultural amalgamation at National level in India to learn about its diversity.
  5. Youth Exchange Programme (YEP): Internationally, it aims to promote socio- economic and cultural exchange initiatives between NCC of India and youth organizations of other countries.

Other camps like Mountaineering Camp, Trekking Camp, Leadership Camps and many more exciting opportunities are awaiting in NCC. Those who grab it, certainly marvel it’s joyous experience.
