Code of Conduct

The St. Xavier's College, Ranchi believes that duty, decorum and discipline are the hallmarks of a good student. Students enrolled at the college must recognise their responsibilities towards the College, Faculty, Office Staff and fellow Students. Failure to maintain appropriate standard of conduct shall initiate disciplinary action.

i). Attendance

  1. Students shall attend all lecture classes, special classes as well as seminars if any during the semester as the college/department may prescribe and not absent themselves from class without adequate reasons.
  2. A Student is eligible to write the semester examination only when he/she has a minimum of 75% attendance in each subject and in aggregate of all the subjects.
  3. Absence from class up to three days needs to be justified with the department's HoD. The Vice-Principal clearance is required, in addition to the HoD, if absence ranges from 4 to 10 days. Beyond 10 days the Principal shall allow a student on adequate justification.
  4. In case of Sickness a Medical Certificate, Treatment Prescription and Medical Test Reports are to be submitted along with Leave Application Form endorsed by Parent/Guardian and forwarded by the Head of respective department. A minimum of 60% attendance is required in each subject separately on Medical Ground to appear in the Semester examination. Student must get the application forwarded/approved by the Principal/Vice-Principal immediate after resuming the class. No back dated sick application will be considered.
  5. A student, who is continuously absent for more than 15 days without intimation, is liable to have his/her name removed from the college's register.

ii). Discipline

  • Students should always wear their college ID card whenever in the college or should be produced whenever demanded by any of the college staff. No student is allowed to enter in the college premises without ID card.
  • Students attending classes, meetings or other gatherings within the college campus are expected to be presentably dressed in accordance with the approved etiquette dress code.
  • Students are not allowed to loiter or stand about the verandahs or corridors of the college during class hours.
  • Students are forbidden to gather near the gate of the college or in the entrance premises between the gate and the hall.
  • The college campus is a 'Drug free, Smoking free and Alchohol free zone'. Possessions and/or consumptions of tobacco, alcohol, narcotic drugs or any other intoxicating substance is strictly prohibited in the Campus and Hostels and in the vicinity of the college's campus.
  • Chewing pan or eating pan parag/gutka/tobacco and smoking are strictly forbidden in the college campus. Such students may be fined if they are caught.
  • Students are strictly forbidden to write or make any mark on the walls or desks, throw paper or ink on the floors of the classrooms or corridors.
  • Possession or usage of weapons, knife, explosives or anything that causes injury/ damage to the life, limb or body of any human being or property is strictly prohibited.
  • In case of any problem, personal or academic, students should report to the respective class teacher or the Vice Principal or the Principal who will help them to solve their problems.
  • Every student is responsible to the college and should take almost care of the college premises/property. Any damage to the college building, furniture and fixtures by the student shall be treated as breach of discipline and disciplinary action will be taken.
  • Student will not be allowed to bring any outsider with them in the college, but in special cases, parents or any outsiders may be allowed with prior permission and valid reasons prior to entering the premises.
  • Students are expected to be seated in their respective classrooms at the stroke of the first bell and wait for the teacher. Students are to make use of the library/reading rooms during free periods.
  • Discipline and good behavior are expected from the students at all social gathering and celebrations at the college.
  • No notice shall be put on the notice boards, including black boards without the written permission of the Principal or the Vice Principal authorized in the matter.
  • All programmes, meeting, gathering, picnic, hiking etc., will be organized only with prior written permission of the Principal
  • Students are not allowed to make complaints in a body or present any collective petition, but they are welcome to present their case, if any, individually.
  • The power relating to the disciplinary action in the college will be the Principal and his/her decision in this respect shall be final. Anyone found violating the code of conduct will be dealt with severely.
  • All the circulars, notices related to examinations and other programmers etc. are displayed on the College Notice Board/College Website, concerned students will be held responsible for the loss, if they failed to read the notice.
  • Students are directed to get issued their two wheelers gate pass from the competent authority. All vehicles should be parked in the allotted parking place. Violators may be restricted from bringing vehicles within the campus.
  • Students are expected to take up all assignments, tests and examinations of the college seriously and would try to perform the best.
  • iii). Behaviour & Conduct

    1. Students are prohibited from doing anything inside the college that will interfere in college administration or affect its public image. No outside influence, political or any other should be brought into, directly or indirectly.
    2. Courtesy and respect must be the key aspects of student's behavior. Disrespect and disobedience may result in disciplinary action, involving suspension or even expulsion.
    3. When the teacher enters the classroom, the student rise, remain standing till they are asked to sit down. When the attendance roll is called, each one must rise and give the presence.
    4. Students are expected to greet all visitors and members of the staff with respect. They should always remember that the college is judged by their conduct. Any major breach of discipline and courtesy, and also disrespect for the members of the college staff, will be treated as serious and respective student(s) for such misbehaviour will be summarily dismissed.
    5. Students are directed to keep silence in the classroom irrespective of the presence or absence of the faculty member.
    6. Students are directed not to use mobile phone in the classrooms and corridors. Mobile phone can be forfeited by any professor/authorities if misuse is detected.
    7. Scribbling on the walls and desks etc. should be avoided. If any student is found scribbling the walls/desks, disciplinary action shall be taken against him/her.
    8. All students are responsible to the college authorities for their behavior both in and outside the college, both individually and collectively. Any report or it is observed objectionable conduct outside the college on the part of the students shall render them liable for disciplinary action.
    9. Throwing waste paper, defacing the walls and committing nuisance in the college campus are punishable offences.
    10. Students are forbidden to organize or attend any meeting within the college or collect money for any purpose from students and outsiders or to circulate among the students any notice or petition of any kind or paste it on the college notice board without the written permission of the Principal.
    11. It is advisable to all students not to bring valuables to the college. The college is not responsible to goods or money lost in college premises.
    12. No books other than text books, reference books or library magazines etc. are brought to the college campus.
    13. All students should be very particular about cleanliness of the college. They should use the baskets and bins specially provided for.
    14. Habitual idleness, late coming, willful disobedience or misconduct, individually or collectively will be seriously dealt with.
    15. Students suffering from diseases declared infectious by a Registered Medical Practitioner and which requires quarantine or segregation will not be permitted to attend the college without being certified as cured by the same Medical Practitioner.
    16. Any students who is persistently insubordinate or is repeatedly or willfully mischievous or is guilty of malpractices in connection with examinations or has committed an act of serious indiscipline and / or misbehavior, or who, in the opinion of the principal has an unwholesome influence on his fellow students may be suspended from the college for specified period or even expelled from the college.
    17. These students are expected to observe decorum to enhance the image of the college. However, T-Shirts without collars or having pictures or slogans and multi-pocket trousers or pants are strictly not allowed.
    18. Girl students are recommended to tie their hair properly and not to come with flowing hair. Girl students are directed not to wear sleeveless dress, short tops & tight jeans and capries.
    19. Ragging and Eve-Teasing are considered as crime and strictly prohibited and if any student indulges in any form of Ragging or Eve-Teasing inside the college premises or outside, he/she may be summarily expelled from the college and/or shall be further subjected to such other criminal proceedings as prescribed by Law.
    20. Students joining the college are, by the very fact, deemed to accept and observe all the rules and regulation to the college to the entire satisfactions of the college authorities.

    iv). Ragging is strictly prohibited

    In 2009, in the wake of Aman Kachroo's death, University Grants Commission (UGC) passed UGC REGULATION ON CURBING THE MENACE OF RAGGING IN HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS, 2009.[16] These regulation mandate every college responsibilities to curb the menace of ragging, including strict pre-emptive measures, like lodging freshers in a separate hostel, surprise raids especially at nights by the anti-ragging squad and submission of affidavits by all senior students and their parents taking oath not to indulge in ragging. Ragging is strictly prohibited and is a punishable offense (crime) by law.

    1. Any conduct by any student or group of students, whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness a fresher or any other student.
    2. Indulging in rowdy or in-disciplined activities by any student or group of students which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship, physical or psychological harm or which may raise fear or apprehension thereof in any fresher or any other student.
    3. Asking any student to do any act which such student will not in the ordinary course do and which has the effect of causing or generating a sense of shame, or torment or embarrassment so as to adversely affect the physique or psyche of such fresher or any other student.
    4. Any act by a student that prevents, disrupts or disturbs the regular academic activity of any other student or a fresher.
    5. Any act of financial extortion or forceful expenditure burden put on a fresher or any other student.
    6. Any act of physical abuse including all variants of it: sexual abuse, homosexual assaults, stripping, forcing obscene and lewd acts, gestures, causing bodily harm or any other danger to health of student.
    7. Any act or abuse by spoken words, emails, post, public insults which would also include deriving perverted pleasure, vicarious or sadistic thrill from actively or passively participating in the discomfiture to fresher or any other student.
    8. Any act that affects the mental health and self-confidence of a fresher or any other student with or without an intent to derive a sadistic pleasure or showing off power, authority or superiority by a student over any fresher or any other student.
    9. Any act of physical or mental abuse (including bullying and exclusion) targeted at another student (fresher or otherwise) on the ground of color, race, religion, caste, ethnicity, gender (including transgender), sexual orientation, appearance, nationality, regional origins, linguistic identity, place of birth, place of residence or economic background with or without an intent to derive a sadistic pleasure or showing off power, authority or superiority by a student over any fresher or any other student.

    v). Revision of Rules & Regulations

    The St. Xavier's College, Ranchi reserves the right to revise these rules and regulations from time to time and the students are bound to obey the same. Revision, if any, shall be displayed on the Notice Board and the students are advised to regularly take note of the information posted in the notice board.

    Note: Matters not covered under the existing rules will rest at the absolute discretion of the Principal.
