Department of Mathematics & Statistics

The Mathematics Department of St. Xavier's College is proud to be the inheritors of a glorious heritage. It has been a constant source of inspiration as well as the driving force behind this Department for nearly five decades. Generations of students and teachers have enjoyed the warmth of his loving care and benefited from the erudition of this apostle of Mathematics. Through a diversity of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, we offer our students a first-rate mathematics education that challenges them to become critical thinkers, prepares them for exciting careers and inspires them to be the creative problem-solvers of tomorrow. We help our students become critical thinkers and creative problem solvers and to prepare them for careers in exciting and rapidly expanding fields. Our young, ambitious department has a well-developed Mathematics Learning Center to provide students with any additional support needed to succeed. Our department also stages a wide range of extracurricular seminars to encourage and stimulate students to expand and develop their mathematics skills and interests. Many of our students choose to major in mathematics. However, for those students who are simply looking to develop a strong math background to supplement a different major, we offer very popular minors in actuarial mathematics and in applied and computational mathematics. The goal of the Mathematics Department is to develop interest towards Mathematics and to create the relationship of Mathematics with other subjects.

Traditionally, Statistics has been defined as a body of scientific methods used for collection, classification, presentation, analysis and interpretation of numerical data originating from diverse fields. The success of the subject therefore lies in its application. Perhaps there is no branch of scientific knowledge where Statistics has not left its imprint. The mission of the Department is to lay the foundation of intellectual leadership in the subject that is of direct benefit to the state and country at large. To this end the department is committed to offering a well-rounded academic program, the specific goals of which include: It was since 2015 that the department started offering Honours courses.

Programmes:

  • The Department offers full time B.Sc. in Mathematics, B.Sc. in Statistics and M.Sc. in Mathematics programmes.
  • The four-year undergraduate programme in Mathematics is divided into eight semesters. It provides a wide range of ideas and concepts about Abstract Algebra, Linear Algebra, Multivariate Calculus, Complex Analysis, Numerical Analysis and Linear Programming. This course deals with the elementary concepts of spatial and numerical relations, including the study of subjects like differential calculus & vector calculus, probability and statistics, solid geometry, and differential equations. The main aim of the course is to train the students in the mathematics stream of B.Sc in the effective management of accounts of any organization.
  • The four-year undergraduate programme in Statistics is also divided into eight semesters. It provides a wide range of ideas and concepts about the practice of collection, organization, maintenance, and interpretation of data so, as to identify the pattern, calculate growth, locate any difference from earlier evaluation etc. B.Sc. (Hons.) course in Statistics is aimed at providing an analytical and conceptual understanding of the subject to bachelor’s level students so, that they are able to apply this knowledge practically. The course structure and design are such that the students pursuing the course are taught about all the aspects of the subjects in a gradual and progressive manner.
  • The M.Sc. Mathematics course is for two years and divided into four semesters. It consists of exploring the specialized and an in-depth understanding of advanced applied mathematics and prepares them for diverse research pursuits gives a deep insight into pure and applied mathematics; also, it caters to the need for practical knowledge of mathematics through experimental practice. The students become more skilled and specialized in a particular subject after the master degree program.
