Mental Health Club

The establishment of the Mental Health Club holds a significant role in recognizing the concerns related to diverse issues and challenges faced in a Higher Education Institutions. Its objectives seek to address the mental and emotional aspects of students, faculties, and non-teaching staffs faced in their daily life. Its efforts however, are not limited to the premise of the institution but beyond the social and personal spaces too. In accordance with the directives issued by the Supreme Court, the college has undertaken the mandate of establishing a Mental Health Club with the initiative to foster a supportive and inclusive educational environment by promoting mental health awareness, preventive interventions and psychosocial and well-being within the institution.


As per the Supreme Court order, guidelines shall apply to all educational institutions across India, including public and private schools, colleges, universities, training centres, coaching institutes, residential academies, and hostels irrespective of their affiliation. As per the MENTAL HEALTHCARE ACT, 2017 NO. 10 OF 2017, it is an act to provide for mental healthcare and services for persons with mental illness and to protect, promote and fulfil the rights of such persons during delivery of mental healthcare and services and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. In reference to the Supreme Court order dated 25.07.2025 in Criminal Appeal No. (S). 3177 / 2025 arising out of special leave to appeal (Crl.) No (s). 6378/2024, in this context, it is directed that all State Universities and Private Universities shall ensure compliance of the provisions of the Guidelines until a suitable statutory or legislative provision has been notified by the State Government in this regard. It is also directed that the Compliance Report regarding adoption of these Guidelines by the respective Private Universities and State Universities and its Constituent and affiliated Colleges. In the light of above, the Department of Higher and Technical (Jharkhand State Higher Education Council) in its Letter No. JSHEC/Others-01/2026-25 dated 14-01-2026 has circulated the draft statutes on Health Care Management and Mental Wellbeing among all State Universities and Private Universities. As per the University Grants Commission, the Government of India was instructed to frame the uniform mental health policy for Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in India on the basis of UMMEED guidelines, Manodarpan Initiative and the National Suicide Prevention Strategy.

St. Xavier's College, Ranchi is a religious Minority Educational Institution affiliated with Ranchi university. The College was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1944 with the primary objective of providing Higher Education in Christian atmosphere to all the deserving students with preferential option for the Christians, Schedule Tribe and Schedule Caste. It is established and administered by Ranchi Jesuit Province of the Society of Jesus. It is registered under the title ‘Xaviers Ranchi’ under the Society’s Registration Act XXI of 1860. St Xavier's College Ranchi is recognised by the University Grants Commission under Sec. 2(f) of UGC Act 1956.

Objectives

  • Appointing professionals and experts in different specialized therapy fields to cater to the mental health needs of students, faculties and non teaching staffs of the college.
  • Ensuring facilities such as counselling and therapy sessions, tele mental health and medical services, establishing crisis management and quick response teams.
  • Sensitizing and training students, faculties and non teaching staffs through orientation programs, seminars, conferences and workshops.
  • Extending inclusivity beyond conventional social and cultural dimensions to recognize and support individuals with disabilities.
  • Collaboration with other social, medical institutional bodies ( NGO’S, Hospitals etc.) like external counselling support, Tele - manas helpline, CIP and RINPAS, Kanke Ranchi, Pathkind, Abhiskar Foundation, Jharkhand State Aids Control Society, Sadar Hospital, Ranchi.
  • To establish that mental health challenges are a universal human experience by dismantling gender-specific stereotypes, broadening the recognition of diverse symptoms across all gender identities.
  • To develop awareness drive to identify threats, promoting well being events etc.
